Defiance in the Overcast

Description

As a signature piece in the Ed Parsons Aviation collection, "Defiance in the Overcast" captures the rugged, functional elegance of a historic Hawker Hurricane in a striking, high-angle bank. Set against a moody, overcast sky with atmospheric low-hanging clouds, the aircraft’s iconic earth and green camouflage, vivid RAF roundels, and bold red gun port patches stand out with commanding clarity. The sweeping, geometric farmland below provides a soft, grounded contrast to the aggressive posture of the World War II fighter. The expertly managed exposure perfectly balances the tack-sharp rendering of the airframe with the kinetic blur of the spinning propeller, preserving the raw energy of mid-century flight in a timeless composition.

Historical Background:

Built during the peak production surge of the Battle of Britain in August 1940 at Kingston upon Thames, this aircraft is a genuine Hawker Hurricane Mk I, bearing the serial number V7497.

It entered frontline service with No. 501 Squadron, operating out of the key 11 Group station at RAF Kenley.

The aircraft's combat career was remarkably short; it was shot down during an operational patrol over Sutton in Kent on 28 September 1940.

The pilot, Pilot Officer E. B. Rogers, successfully survived the incident by taking to his parachute.
