Aegean Sentinel

Description

The timeless silhouette of a Supermarine Spitfire is captured in a stunningly isolated composition above a shimmering, textured expanse of water. Stripped of any terrestrial horizon, the aircraft becomes a pure, minimalist study in aerodynamic grace and mechanical purpose. The Spitfire, distinguished by its clipped wings and the striking blue and white roundels of the Hellenic Air Force, glides effortlessly through the brilliant maritime light. Masterful exposure control freezes the intricate, historic details of the airframe while rendering the propeller in a fluid, continuous blur, perfectly conveying the visceral, kinetic energy of this enduring mid-century legend.

Historical Background:

Constructed at the Castle Bromwich shadow factory in late 1943, this aircraft is a Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXc bearing the serial number MJ755.

It originally saw service with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, flying with No. 43 Squadron in the Mediterranean and Italian theaters.

In 1947, MJ755 was transferred to the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) alongside dozens of other Spitfires to help rebuild Greece's military aviation capabilities.

The aircraft served in an active combat role during the Greek Civil War, operating as a tactical fighter and reconnaissance platform out of Sedes Air Base in Thessaloniki.

After its retirement from active service in 1953, it spent decades as a static gate guardian and later as a cherished centerpiece at the Hellenic Air Force Museum in Tatoi, Athens.

Following an extensive, multi-year restoration project funded by the Icarus Foundation and completed at the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar in the UK, MJ755 returned to the skies in 2020.

Today, it holds the profound distinction of being the only airworthy Hellenic Air Force Spitfire in the world.
